I/ve been reporting from North Caucasus region for the AP and leading the Regnum Caucasus office when things in Nalchik started getting really alarming. Ive reported from the sites of special operations conducted by the Russian security services in different parts of Caucasus. Have witnessed unspeakable violations of human rights and Russias own Constitution. Had to see and record on photo/video piles of bodies of peoples killed in many cases innocent, some of them of children from infant to teen ages, some of pregnant women. Had to get to know many of the people who are now imprisoned, killed or listed as disappeared. Endured unbearable pressure, moral and physical attacks from the FSB and some vocal warnings from the other side. Risked more than my own life releasing the pictures from prison - evidences of apparent brutal torture. Was framed in many Russian government controlled publications as a CIA spy for reporting for the American media. But the Nalchik case stands out of all my reports. Ive been investigating the case for years now, trying to find answers. One thing that I am sure in after all this years - the Russian FSB had all possible tools and ability to prevent the attack from happening. Theyve got the flash drive from Astemirovs computer with the detailed plan of the attack months prior October. The Russias Security Council (presided by Mr. Putin himself) was fully informed. They chose to let it happen to use this as an excuse for massive zachistkas, for unprecedented scale of atrocities and for the PR purposes. Now, who holds the FSB responsible for the deaths of so many innocent people? For the suffering of so many families? For the trauma that left such a deep scars on the soul of my beautiful Nalchik? I guess it is not happening anytime soon. Not with this regime in Kremlin.
