I ventured out to pick up a few groceries this evening in Southport. While in the store, I spotted an elderly man who appeared to be disoriented. I went up to him and asked if everything was okay. He said, I cant seem to find my wife. Ive been all over the store. Im sure shes here cause I cant drive anymore. As he spoke, I noticed he had on a U.S. Navy veteran cap, with a few ribbons pinned on it. I asked where he had served. The South Pacific, he said. I told him my late father had also served in the South Pacific. That brief exchange led to him telling two amazing stories about his days during World War II. I said, Sir, those are incredible stories. You ought to write them down. I sure wish my father had put some of his on paper. The vet smiled and said, Thats not a bad idea. About that time his wife approached and they both shared, Ive been looking for you, at the same time. He shook my hand and they walked off with their cart. As I was putting groceries in the back of my car, I heard a car horn. Pulled up behind me was the old couple. She said, I just wanted to thank you. Hes the most excited Ive seen him in years. He wants to write down those stories and I had to go back in the store and get him a few notebooks. Its obvious I dont need anything else for Christmas. I just got the best gift ever.
