I very much enjoyed the Village Square Immigration Debate at SPC/Seminole this evening. The speakers all had some views in common, and of course, some differences of opinion. I found it informative, and even had the opportunity to pose a question. One panelist argued that immigrants come to the US for economic opportunity and appeared to lean toward booting out all illegal immigrants and encouraging NGOs to go into their countries and provide support, ie education, to boost internal economic growth. I asked how that could possibly be a solution in countries where immigrants flee to the US for political or religious asylum or because of internal conflict, either war or oppressive governments. It got some people thinking!
