I visited INS Shivaji in 1964 for giving lectures on Naval Architecture to the trainees. I was a bachelor then. Among my acquaintances there were Lt Cdr Agarwala (E) and his very pleasant wife. There were celebrations in the wardroom in the evening culminating with a dancing competition. As I did not know anyone, I sat just watching the fun start. Agarwala came across to me and said that he heard from LCDR SC Bose that I had attended the Victor Sylvester Dancing Academy in UK. His wife was a good dancer but unfortunately he did not dance. He asked me if I could partner her for the evening. I agreed and took Mrs Agarwala, few years my senior, to the floor. I was delighted to find that she was nimble and was following me effortlessly. It was sheer joy to dance with her. There were elimination rounds and the numbers depleted until there were just two couples left on the floor. A Lt. Choudhry who was dancing with Mrs. Daniels (the XOs wife) and our pair had reached the finals. The odds favored the other couple who had won earlier contests and were accomplished dancers. Mrs Agarwala and I were unknown quantities To everyones surprise, we were declared the winners. It was enjoyable for me as Mrs Agarwala danced like a fairy. I gave the trophies we won to her and thanked her for being a delightful partner. Alas, my kind of dancing waltz, quickstep, foxtrot, tango, cha cha cha and samba are passe now . New and more athletic forms of dancing have taken over.
