I volunteer once a week, teaching prison yoga to boys....the same age as the majority of those being gunned down. I hold them in my heart. They make me smile. Quite a few of them are hispanic , some white and some black ~ Oregon, I suppose. They have complex trauma. Discrimination is a seed root in trauma. Theres a new one that reminds me of the kids that I used to teach dance to that were birthed by an addicted mothers. He just cant stop. He cant as much as he would like to ~ he has no control. He cant be with himself. I love putting a tibetan singing bowl in their hands and challenge them to get sounds. They spin in circles the wooden stick around the rim of the bowl like a bat out of hell, while I whisper in their ear, slow down. For a brief time, they are present within themselves. They start to slow down and out comes soothing sounds. They enter a state of mindfulness and relaxation. Sometimes , most times they cant close their eyes because of the fear ~ due to complex trauma. I place fake candles before them. They love them and even ask for them to keep. They can do meditation without closing their eyes and they like the way it makes them feel. I tell them they are perfect, whole and complete ~ its thier true selves and it breaks my heart because its not in their story...what the body says when they hear that. I love them. They are my responsibility. Maybe they are our responsibility. My only intention is to bring them love and compassion. They are youth, 17, 18, 19, 20s, still not fully emotionally and mentally developed. They laugh, like kids do, they want to be home with family. They are unfinished. #NONVIOLENCE #COMPASSION #LOVE
