I volunteered to cover a shift for another nurse on Thanksgiving tonight, about a week ago. Come today, I was very annoyed at myself for picking up a shift and ruining my Thanksgiving. As I drove home from work just now, I thought wow, Carla, you are so darn lucky to be healthy, educated, in love, and just good overall. My patients are young children with long term conditions (muscular dystrophy, ALS, respiratory failure, cystic fibrosis etc). They most likely will never get to experience all the joys Ive got to experience in my 26 years being alive. It was such a important perspective I needed to understand how thankful and lucky I am to get to work on Thanksgiving. That is all. :)
