I voted yes on the Smith of WA Part A Amendment 10 to #HR4435, which requires the president to develop and implement a plan to close the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, by the end of 2016. Both Pres. Bush and Sen. McCain have expressed support for closing the facility. Thirty-seven retired generals and admirals sent members of Congress a letter this month urging Congress to remove restrictions on transferring Guantanamo detainees. And, on May 14, the Department of Justice released a report affirming that national security would not be jeopardized should Guantanamo detainees be transferred. Its time to end indefinite detention at Guantanamo and determine who is an enemy of the United States and who is not. The amendment was not agreed to 177-247.
