I want to get one thing straight right now. Im going to go ballistic on the very next smug asshole who states emphatically that Sgt. Bergdahl is a deserter. He was promoted in absentia AFTER his capture, and the Army isnt in the habit of promoting deserters. Moreover, barracks scuttlebutt is NOT due process. It amazes me just how many self-styled patriots and armchair war hawks are quick to dismiss the investigative proficiency of the Army CID. Sgt. Bergdahl is not a deserter, nor will he be a deserter until he faces a court martial and is convicted. And it is unlikely that will ever happen, because the evidence doesnt exist against him. I am just appalled at what a lot of backbiting, malicious and outright petty sinners we have become. One article in THE DAILY BEAST by someone who served in Bergdahls battalion but was not one of his confederates is not proof of desertion. Over the last dozen years we threw eager twenty-two year old boys like Bergdahl into the pressure cooker of fighting guerillas on their own soil, and now we suddenly become gung-ho because their reactions incommoded us. Well, Ill remind everyone that desertion under fire is still a capital offence, so the next person who bandies that term about cavalierly is going to get a royal earful from me. Enough is enough. Not everything in this world is a conspiracy, and sometimes twenty-two year old boys dodging IEDs and shooting natives for no really good reason are liable to break. But youd have to have a heart to appreciate that.
