I want to inform folks of some truths that are being spread by a uninformed FB page in which the person who started it will not allow varying opinions to be posted and will delete those who disagree. 1. We did buy a City Car for all the staff to use. Why? because the old one broke down several times with transmission problems leaving the driver stranded. Would you want your wife or spouse sitting on the side of the road while on the way to a meeting? No. 2. The replacement of the Police Car is for a car that seldom gets used...If you dont have a driver why buy a car. 3. Vests, stop Cindy and ask her if she wants a vest. The answer is no. I told her to be fitted and she did because that what a good employee does. Policy for the PD dictates that a officer is to wear the vest but she prefers not to and as an employee she would be in violation of said policy. 4. Cages, two officers want them as we were told yesterday, the rest do not. Officers know what will make them safe and we rely on their information. The dodge chargers have very little room in the back and a cage we (the council) follow the advice of the chief and Paul who puts the cars together. 5. No insurance money was ever spent on anything other than to replace the car that was damaged in the wreck. The truck was on the capitol improvement plan, and was part of the rolling stock replacement list. It gets driven daily by the way. 6. No police officer is under a gag order or imitated not to speak up by this council Some of the officers routinely stop by my house and office to keep me updated and I appreciate that and would never want to violate their right to have an open door. 7. The officers highly underpaid. That is simply not true. While we can not pay our PD what maybe someone wants or expects of us, the committee that is looking at this has seen that are wages are close to standard for a town this size. None of us make we would like, but to say they are grossly underpaid is another lie that this page promotes. Please understand that I do not like to respond to people who have created this FB page but I must to set the record straight. It also shows the person who is spreading this stuff has a lack of personal integrity. I have tried to have an open door and if anyone has ever felt otherwise I am very sorry. I have great respect for our officers and will do all I can to make sure their needs are taken care of. City Hall has open records, we cant hide anything. Our meetings have always been open and they will continue to be. So I challenge this person, where have you been for these many years. If you feel so strongly in support of our officers, where have you been? I hope you understand while I wrote this, there are good hard working people that work hard to make Elgin a better place and it takes one person with an ax to grind to tear a city apart. Hopefully you will help me by putting an end to this craziness. Larry
