I want to say- even though my candidacy was a joke, thanks to everyone who added their thoughts to our discussion about Hamiltons future the other day- aside from my shitty joke, I read every comment. Regardless of who you vote for Mayor, its obvious that a lot of you have a good idea of whats important. Please make sure we dont have another election more about one single divisive capital project (Stadium, Red Hill, etc.), or personality conflicts between candidates. Lets make sure this is an election about all the issues- lots of incumbents get to sail back into office when the election isnt a genuine review of their performance, but rather a binary debate over one position. That kind of election produces bad results. Hold the media accountable for what they decide to focus on- so much of our local debate is framed and guided by them. Dont let them decide for you which candidates are worth listening to or considering. Make sure you focus not just on the Mayoral race but on councillor races as well- Mayors are only one vote on a 16-member council. We change Mayors regularly but we tend to hang on to councillors, for better or for worse. We never pay much attention to the School Board during elections, and this term, we got the Trustees we deserved. Dont ignore that part of the ballot this time. Im not running, but that doesnt mean for the next six months I wont be active and involved- my priority is to help people who give a shit about our city connect to the process that is supposed to be responsive to their concerns- 364 days of the year, anyway.
