I want to start this post with an outpouring of support and love - TopicsExpress

I want to start this post with an outpouring of support and love for those with ALS. My Granny, who was and continues to be a great inspiration in my life, died from ALS and a good friend Chad Smith, also a college roommate and Cross Country teammate from USI, is currently battling ALS. So, I have been and will continue to be a GREAT supporter and friend to those who have ALS. However, I will not be taking the ice bucket challenge. Why- because I do not believe that it is right to kill innocent life to gain life, to destroy young children to attempt to find a cure. It is a known fact that the ALS Association supports research that destroys human embryos (AKA-cute, little, innocent babies). So, this being the case, there will be no ice cold water going over my head, but I will promise you this...every time I am challenged to the ice bucket challenge, I will do 3 holy hours in the presence of the Most Blessed Sacrament (one for my Granny, one for Chad Smith and one for the innocent lives that are taken by embryonic research) begging God for a cure to ALS. On a side note- my Old School flip-phone which cannot text, cannot take videos either, so I do not know how I would have gotten a video anyway...below is the letter from our Archdiocese about the destroying of innocent life. August 20, 2014 Dear Colleagues in Catholic Education, I want to bring to your attention some important information concerning the ALS “ice bucket challenge” to raise funds for the ALS Association. We have received several calls asking whether or not Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis can take part in this fundraiser. I have attached the “Fundraising Vetting/Approval Form” which should be filled out prior to raising funds for organizations sponsored by the Catholic Church. We are sympathetic to people who suffer from ALS and their loved ones who care for them, but unfortunately the ALS Association supports research that destroys human embryos in order to procure embryonic stem cells. Their position on the issue is a matter of public record. The Catechism of the Catholic Church is very clear on this issue: It is immoral to produce human embryos intended for exploitation as disposable biological material. (CCC#2275) The Catholic Church teaches that the life of each human being is sacred from the moment of conception to natural death. Donating to an organization that advocates destroying human embryos for whatever reason is immoral and must be avoided in all circumstances. We must therefore ask you not to send any funds to this organization. I understand that this is a difficult matter, especially since many people suffer from ALS. We can only hope for – and support – the development of research that seeks to cure such illnesses without destroying young human life in order to do so. One such organization is the John Paul II Medical Research Institute, which promotes the support of a number of research initiatives, including those dedicated to finding solutions for patients with chronic illnesses. Here’s the link for more information about the JPII Medical Research Institute and how you can support their work: jp2mri.org. Sincerely, Gina Kuntz Fleming Superintendent of Catholic Schools- Indianapolis
