I want to talk about the word Petty. In Mirriam, it means secondary, small, or insignificant. In the context of which I will use the word in this post, it means someone whose behavior makes them appear small. Or, someone whose behavior belittles themselves. Being petty speaks to an individuals level of maturity. Primarily driven by ego, I had a recent situation where someone decided to act petty with a small group of entrepreneurs, of which I was a member, and withheld something that was of value to the group because they felt they could do so. They felt wronged and honestly, no one wronged anyone. What they thought they were doing was hurting the group but in all actuality, they were hurting themselves. This individual could have benefited greatly from what we were creating, but they chose the smaller route by being petty. Fast forward to today and an opportunity has opened up to our group that far exceeds any one persons contribution to our group, even this individual. In fact, had this individual stayed the course they could have benefited immensely from what we are doing. The opportunity at this point is so SIGNIFICANT the members of our group dont even understand the immense value. This is is a true story.... Im not the smartest person in the world but I got a lot more intelligence in my brain than the average person, and Im not trying to toot my horn. My mother Gail always told me to be humble, patient, and hard working. She also taught me to be discerning in spirit. I always hear people talking about burning bridges, cutting people off, etc., but what I find is that the people who need a TEAM the most are the ones hurting the most. The ones that need FAMILY the most are the ones struggling the most. Before you put your ego in charge of making beneficial and long-term life decisions you might want to think about whether your willingness to be small in action and thinking is really a good decision for you. This person has not a clue as to the magnitude of how dropping the ball with this has cost them. Opportunity is everywhere, but there are a small number of people who truly understand how to discern and take advantage of a good opportunities. Its when an individual puts themself and their priorities over other people that the blessing is missed, and last time I checked there are a LOT of us that cant afford to miss out on blessings. Avoid the pettiness, its not a good look on anyone. #cantavetalk
