I want to tell you about my newest hero: Sir Raymond dAnjou. - TopicsExpress

I want to tell you about my newest hero: Sir Raymond dAnjou. Last night at our weekly fight practice, a new person and her son were in attendance. I think this was their second or third visit after finding us on Facebook. Her son Cahl is maybe 10..I should ask, I am no good with this. He plays chess, and there was a lively game going between Cahl and Sir Raymond when I arrived at practice. I know I know...a Knight is supposed to play chess (in my SCA world, lets not debate that now), but its been rare for me to actually see this in action. And in such a touching, poignant way. It was glorious! Both were working hard strategies, arranged a mutual do-over/trade/whatevah, and there was definite challenge for Sir Raymond (or he made it look that way, also extremely ok) and he stroked his chin and hmmmd more than once. Of course this delighted Cahl. I watched for half an hour, more than one game, Sir Raymond as focused on Cahl and the game as he would be on the list Martial. This was a battle too! Cahls mothers eyes were glowing with pride. Who won? BOTH. All of us. This marvelous bonding between a Midrealm Knight and a child new to the SCA was truly a magical moment. And I almost missed it. I only went to practice last night to drop off some treats but it was I who got the biggest TREAT last night. Cahls mom posted to our canton list this morning. I dont think she would mind me sharing her words: I would also like to thank Sir Raymond (did I get that right? ugh, I am so awful with names) for playing chess with my son Cahl. He was already asleep in the truck on the way home and as I was putting him in bed a couple mins ago he told me that he wanted a tunic like yours but in blue . That was Sir Raymonds fighting tunic :-)
