I want to thank everyone for their prayers and concern for my family as we are going through this difficult time. I just want to give a status update for all those that I have not gotten a chance to speak with directly. A few weeks ago, Caroline started with some swelling over her left eye. Being as she is very active, we assumed that she had bumped it... as the days went by, the swelling was worse and she was more uncomfortable. We took her to her pediatrician who referred us to a plastic surgeon. The plastic surgeon agreed that most likely it was traumatic and most likely a hematoma (collection of blood under the skin.) As it was causing her discomfort, he decided the best course of action would be to open it up and fix the problem. Very minor procedure. Unfortunately, he did not find what he expected. One CT scan and a biopsy later, Caroline has been diagnosed with Eosinophilic granuloma. It is not considered a malignancy, but it is a very destructive tumor that has eaten a hole in her skull. The next step is to meet with the pediatric oncologist to determine if this is a systemic problem or a localized tumor. Fortunately, most of the time, the problem is localized and self limiting. If it is systemic, she will need chemotherapy. After all tests are complete, we will start making plans to repair the hole in her skull. Our appointment with the oncologist is Wednesday.
