I want to thank the voters of Queen Anne’s County for electing me as your next County Commissioner from District 1 and for making me the top vote getter among all Commissioner candidates across the board. I appreciate your vote of confidence and I will work to manage county government so that it is helpful to its citizens and not harmful. On my first regular meeting I pledge to make a motion to repeal the Beach Parking Permit Fee. I believe our public beaches and parks that are already paid for should remain free to our citizens. These are not currently funded as enterprise funds and beach cleanups and patrolling can and should be done just like it is for our parks currently – through the general fund. I will also work to improve the business climate in our county and reduce the percentage of residents who must commute out of the county to work. While we may not be able to change our status of bedroom community for the Baltimore/Washington/Annapolis region – we certainly can work to help our existing businesses grow and prosper and hire more local residents and hopefully attract more high-end businesses and government agencies to locate here in the land of pleasant living. Finally – I will vote to return some of your tax dollars back to you should we have a large surplus at the end of the fiscal year. Especially in light of the fact that taxes were raised last term when the recession was in full bloom. Now that the county has its fiscal head above water (so to speak) – we should lower our rates and return some of the surplus to you the taxpayers. I look forward to working with my fellow Commissioner-Elects during this transition period and believe we can work together with our new Governor Larry Hogan to create a better county for all our citizens.
