I want to work in an office I want to walk into a beautiful building that smells of very important I want to hear my heals click on the art deco tile Security will say good morning and give me a smile Because they know me I’ll press the button on an elevator And go to the 26th floor I’ll have my own little cubicle And a bulletin board for pictures of Layla when she was little And ones of my handsome husband I want to walk down a hallway And see all my friends Hey Mike Hey Jim Hey Sue How was your weekend? I want to make coffee Gossip by the cooler Have a fresh cobb salad at the commissary Show the cashier my ID Perhaps someday I’ll move up To a room with a window And a Hollywood view And my name on door A sofa with a purple pillow (or 2) I’ll have an assistant Who will tell everyone who calls That I’m in a meeting Even if it’s not true Someone who can get me a Starbucks just the way I like it And I would buy her one too (or him) There’ll be a tech geek on call So my computer never fails Lip balm in my drawer An expense account for my nails I’ll have a spot in a the lot that says reserved for me My name on the wall behind it So everyone can see I work in an office For once in my life Because sometimes the grass is greener On the other side
