I wanted clear this up. What is the role of an artist on an independent label????? Most artist believe their only job is just to write and record the music. Well, thats more the case for artist on a major label roster, but they still had other task the have to follow like ( in store appearances, radio station meet and greets and etc) but for the artist on an indie label, much more is required because an indie label isnt fully established, because usually they doesnt have the budget that major labels have so more ground and footwork is required. So in most cases the owner of the label fund the recording, buy beats, arrange the appointments for the engineer and artist to work, fund the project ( graphic design, mix and masteing cost, cd duplication cost, funding promotional material, pay for web advertisement and etc ) this alone can cost a couple thousand dollars. Now if the cd is a mix tape where you use other artist beats, you cant really expect to make the money you desire, so at best you may get 5 dollars a cd if your work look professional. As an artist depends on you if you cd is going to get sold or not. The owner of the company can place them in the stores, but if the people in ur city isnt familiar with you, thwn 9 times outta 10 they will not support. Now it is up to you as an artist to get out in the publics view so they can see who you are. If there is 10 clubs and 20 bars in surrounding areas in ur city, these are places you must make an appearance at least twice a week. If you are getting ur music played by the djs, you have 2 be visible. Social media is an important tool. You must be very involved in social media, plus its free. You shouldnt go weeks without sharing a link or making a post. Every artist should have some type of computer in the crib. It dont cost much, if you can by an 8th of loud everyday, you can save up for a computer. You have 2 get out and network by doing collabs with as many artist as possible. You can be on the computer searching for local shows to perform at. All these things should be done by the artist while the owner of the company is handling the other aspects of the business. If an artist aint doing these things, then wat makes you think youll ever make it in the music industry? ??????
