I wanted to check this out before we discussed it. With the addition of mediation and jury nullification, this fine was way worth the risk to the employer. The person, as a temp had no insurance and his family recovers none of this fine. As employees themselves become cheaper to have, their lives become cheaper to lose. In some cases employers now carry something called dead peasant policies. No, I did not make that name up - insurers did. They are policies on the lives of employees so that the insurer pays out more than the fine would be for the employees life - making them worth more dead than alive. The name makes very, very clear what they think of employees.
