I wanted to give some history on the use of The Grimorium Verum in Mormon history. I know this is opening a can of worms, but court records dont lie. If your upset by this, please skip the post. Its not for everyone. William Stafford, an friend of the Smith Family, had reported one of his sheep had been taken without payment being made by Joseph Smith Jr. for a ritual. Staffords Nephew was asked by a court investigator named M. Wilford Poulson if Joseph stole the sheep and if so, why. The young man was quoted as saying Jo the prophet told my Uncle William Stafford, he wanted a fat black sheep. He said he wanted to cut its throat and make it walk in a circle 3 times around, and it would prevent a pot of money from leaving. Joseph Smith Jr. admitted he did use the sheep in a ritual and was willing to pay for it in work for Stafford. He made sap buckets and all was forgiven. There was no punishment for black magic! I was surprised but not to shocked because cunning people were not uncommon in that area at that time in the 1820s. So what is the G.V. connection? Its the dagger used. The Smith family had a dagger with the sigil of Mars on it. Wile it is a different sigil then the one you see in books today it is listed in The Magus as the right sigil. the source of the picture for the dagger sigil is the Lee Library at Brigham Young University in Utah. My source was from a text by D. Michael Quinn PhD. Thomas Karlssons book Qabalah ,Qliphoth , and Goetic Magic states on page 214 of the English version The Grimorium Verum also describes two kinds of daggers that the magician should obtain. One should be like a lancet ie a thin bladed, double edged surgical knife. It should be made or obtained on the day of Jupiter (Thursday) during the hour of Jupiter under a waxing moon. The other knife is a sacrificial dagger that has a handle made of wood. According to the Grimorium Verum it is used to cut the throat of a sheep... The knife should be made or obtained on the day of March (should read Mars but Karlssons book has a typo) (Tuesday) during a new moon, and on the handle one carves these signs. Karlssons text has a sigil of Mars I have never seen before but share some of the same shapes in the figures as The Magus gives. There is to much in common with the rite and use of the knife described to ignore IMO. I have researched this topic for many years now and I know what I am looking at. The other odd thing about the dagger is it belongs not to Joseph JR. but to his Father Joseph SR. It was passed down through the family line Father to son. The Smith Family has ties to magic going back to at least the mid 1600s when they tossed there relative Mary Towne Easty to the wolves during the witch trials of 1693. Yes, that Mary Easty from the true story for the movie called The Conjuring . How do you like them apples? So Mormons did use all the same methods as we do now in there early days. They read the same books and based there magic on them. Knowing this, how would you see Mormonism, as Christian or as LHP?
