I wanted to highlight that earlier this week I passed a motion for the Standing Committee on Natural Resources to undertake a study - Ukraine Energy Security. My motion seeks to conduct a study to identify opportunities for Canada and Canadian industry to contribute to the global diversification of energy supply to Ukraine and the rest of Europe. It is important to recognize that Canadas allies require safe and secure access to energy as demonstrated by the Russian regimes recent attempts to restrict energy supplies to Europe. The study began on Tuesday in Ottawa with witnesses from Canadian Industry and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland. The Standing Committee heard about the deep concerns for energy security given recent events developing in Ukraine. Mark Selkeld from the Canadian Petroleum Services Association of Canada highlighted the abundance of resources in Ukraine and Canadian expertise that could assist as a medium and long term solution to Energy security issues across Europe. Ukraine is highly dependent on natural gas, 60% of which is imported from Russia, and more than 80 countries rely on natural gas access from Russia. Other countries are almost 100% dependent on Russian supplied gas. The Globe and Mail has reported that Gazprom has threatened to cut supplies to Ukraine over an unpaid gas bill it puts at more than 2 billion and warned this could lead to reduced deliveries to other clients in Europe. The study will be completed later this week.
