I wanted to post this, in case anyone might find it helpful - especially if youre concerned/unhappy with the change in royalty rates by ACX (or, if youre not in the U.S. and thus cant use ACX regardless). I worked with a producer in England on the audiobook of my short story, Betty & Howards Excellent Adventure. I went outside of ACX because I had a specific narrator in mind (Doctor Who actress Nicola Bryant), and because she had a relationship with this producer and his studio, she arranged things, and I had an excellent experience working with him. His name is Neil Gardner, and he runs Ladbroke Studios. But he also has a business distributing audiobooks: spokenworldaudio/ He emailed me about this, and asked that I share his information. This is what hes got to offer for audiobook production/distribution: I had a thought about offering an alternative to using ACX and having to put up with the sudden forthcoming drop in Audible fees. Alongside Ladbroke Audio (and my radio production business) I run spokenworldaudio and we pay 50% commission on all sales, offer non-exclusive contracts and, I hope, are rather less faceless to deal with. Of course, we arent the global behemoths Audible and iTunes are, so we also ensure all our titles also sell via those platforms. We have a distribution agreement with them based at 30%. My thought is this - you could do a deal with Spokenworld Audio, and drive your fans/listeners/readers to buy via us, thus getting the 50% rate as much as possible. But to ensure you also get passing trade we also sell via Audible and iTunes (the reality being that youd earn 15% off these sales, as wed be splitting the earnings as per the 50/50% agreement). To make the deal sweeter, any audiobooks we sold this way, I would offer you a 15% discount on the cost of production, should you choose to use Ladbroke Audio again to produce. If you want to contact him directly, you can do so through the website, or at his email address: neilgardner@ladbrokeaudio
