I wanted to share this panel discussion on Black Nationalism and the legacy of Malcolm X. Listening to Cornel West talking about how we are not anywhere near being a post-racial society but a society that is and forever has been in an Age of Empires. I have been very curiously reading into the movements of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X recently and its as if the meaning of resistance has been redefined to me. The questions that have risen to me after the jury decision was announced after I saw the sadness and frustration of people in Ferguson, Missouri. My questions were what does it mean to resist and to what conditions would allow resistance? What types of resistance can we take to fight back? What struck out most importantly to me was the importance the put on characterizing what Malcolm taught us. He spoke about Self-Defense, not violence. For what happens everyday in America with the abhorrent legalized persecution of people of colour is the very definition of imperialism, colonialism, neoliberalism using racism, social and environmental destruction and genocide with the ultimate goal of white supremacy.
