I was 6th grader at Lydia Middleton Elementary in 1972 when I bought my first 45 record from G.C. Murphys on Main Street. It was Sylvias Mother by Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show. I took it home and played on my moms record player over and over. The melody and especially the lyrics to this song hit me so hard that I actually cried. I thought about the song all day at school the next day. I sang it to myself on the way home. Then the first thing I did when I got home from school was play the record again. Its about a guy who loves a girl and hes trying to talk to her on the phone but her mother will not let him talk to her. Heres a special live version recorded on Shel Silversteins houseboat.
