I was Googling for something totally unrelated and Jim Schmitts obituary popped up. He was a long time Wabasha business man . Ive posted just a portion because it contains a tidbit of his and Wabashas history. James J. “Jim “ Schmitt, age 94 of Wabasha, owner of the Gambles Store in Wabasha, died Saturday, July 16, 2011. He was born August 28, 1916 in Decatur, IA, the son of Raymond and Constance (Reese) Schmitt. The family moved to Thorp, WI when he was young. He married Helen T. “Sue” Szelcz October 30, 1940 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Thorp. Jim was a baker, learning the trade from his father. He owned and operated bakeries while living in Sparta and Cashton, WI. The family moved to Wabasha in 1950 with the intention of purchasing The Family Bakery from Earl Schnirring. Mr. Schnirring decided to keep the business so Schmitt’s purchased the Gambles Store from Elsie Erickson after reading a for sale sign in her window. Jim and later his son, Gary, have owned and operated the store since that time.
