I was a JIS student from 1999 to 2005, which was a little before and mostly during the time of President Bushs war on terror. I remember that visiting students from other international schools would comment on the schools advanced, fortress-like security system, which was implemented as a direct reaction to fear of terrorist activity in Indonesia. In their words your schools like a prison, man. Fast forward to 2014, and JIS hasnt been blown to pieces yet. However, when news such as this comes out I cant help but notice the irony of the situation: the school invested so much in shielding its student population from the outside world, but the real threats - these predators - were already working in close proximity to the children the school was working so hard to protect. While its been years since I last set foot in Jakarta, I sincerely hope that the school, the expat community and especially the young boy and his family can recover from this horrible ordeal, and that justice will prevail where these perpetrators are concerned.
