I was a child of the Depression, born when my Father had lost his farm, his livelhood, and all his hopes for the future. McCorry Street, a short dead end Street in West Jackson, had about thirty or forty homes on it, I can remember every house and could count them up in my mind, and was made up of poor working class people, all of whom were struggling to survive, but none of whom were living in poverty. All my childhood I remember that my parents worried about money, bills that were due, and particularly how they would pay for a serious illness. Carol has just had a serious major surgery in one of the finest Hospitals in the nation, rated higher in surgeries than the downtown hospitals, spend four nights in the hospital and now is in a excellent rehab facility operated by Marion Joy, a premier institution in the nation, where she will be for a week or two. I have had discussions with some of my friends as to what the total cost of this treatment will be and the guesses range from seventy five thousand to twice that much. Medicare will cover all of it. I want everyone in America, one of the truly great nations of the world, to have access to medical care, regardless of who they are, just as we all have access to education, police protection, a fire department, and other services. We all have to do our share to pay for these basic human rights. But in the richest nation in the world some forty million people do not have adequate medical care although we spend more than any other nation per capital on health care. As a ;progressive I am very sad that Obama and his administration have screwed up the new health care law. They need to apologize and start all over and the other side needs to quit hating Obama and work with him to create a new program. The future of our nation depends on both Reps and Dems and Independents learning to work together for the common good or we will pass into oblivion
