I was a guest on the Sully show on Kogo 600 am today. We were talking about the minimum wage issue. Sully takes the corporate view against and spouts their usual drivel about small business suffering, and he ignores their suffering employees! When good points were made by Dr. Peters on raising the wage he attempted to confuse the issue and claim Dr. Peters did not answer his question and he did, but Sully didnt like the answer. Dr.Peters said these small businesses have a bad business model and that is why they cannot afford the rise in cost of a raise in minimum wage, and I agreed and called in. As I was a businessman and majored in Business Management I think I have a better understanding than someone like Sully. In my observations and from what information we have it looks to me like businesses are not suffering at all, and if they are it is their own fault for not being more competitive. There was not time to go into the depth of knowledge I have so I had a good suggestion for employers to make their new pay rolls they should cut their advertising budgets. Sully who was charming until I made such and excellent point, he suddenly seemed quite mad that I made my point so eloquently on the air, so in typical radio fashion berate the caller intimidate and smear. In other words he called my ideas stupid, i e calling me stupid, and he quoted some bogus biased unscientific survey from Harvard in order to make himself sound smarter than he actually is. He asked loaded questions in the first place and its all about dispiriting the listeners, and I got them good. You want to know why, because advertising makes their stations run and he got angry when I said cut the advertising, because thats his job! He cannot be completely unbiased then can he? We know it is true. Big businesses know and are cutting frivolous advertising expenses and marketing campaigns that bear little results if any. Sully got mad because his show is particularly vulnerable I believe. I think someone must be having a hard time keeping or getting sponsors. It is the first thing to cut in a business in hard economic times as well it should be, its an extravagance and a luxury to make expensive television commercials, when they could just as easily use a radio spot for a lot less money for an example, and big businesses waste a fortune on art and new office furniture when that money should go towards the fair pay of their workers. Most of these so called small businesses in San Diego are making plenty of money and are not hurting at all unless it is their own fault and as such deserve to go out of business and please die if you do not believe in a fair equitable wage for their workers. If they all closed tomorrow I would not care or shed one tear. If they cant survive the new business environment then good riddance to them and their bad businesses. Wages are going to go up regardless so they had better start paying up and just get used to the new normal! If they die who cares? I say with a great deal of sarcasm because they are not going out of business because they have to pay fairly finally! These wages are actually kept artificially low by the government anyway and workers deserve a much higher wage than what is being passed into legislation soon.
