I was a hero today. Driving I noticed a large land turtle making - TopicsExpress

I was a hero today. Driving I noticed a large land turtle making his uneven way across the road. Traffic was fairly heavy for the road, and there was a car on my tail. I pulled out to avoid driving over the turtle, the car behind me also swerved over. I then indicated that I was going to stop on the side of the road. The car behind me was not amused: I got a dirty look and also sort of a horn mumble - as if they were pissed but understood what I was doing. I stopped quite a way from the turtle, and I was scared that oncoming traffic would run over the turtle before I could get to it to move it. I sort of walked in the road so that the oncoming drivers would notice me. All of them made their way around the turtle, and the one car who could not go around the creature, slowed down and carefully made sure they centered between their wheels. As I got much closer to the turtle, the pick-up truck on my side came to a halt, effectively protecting both the turtle and me, and a big 18wheeler stopped on the other side, also effectively protecting us. I smiled my thanks and strode bravely forward to pick up the turtle. Now I have never picked up a turtle that big ( length of shell was probably 16), and every turtle I have picked up immediately pulled its head and legs into its shell. Not this turtle! As I picked him up his head shot out further, and he began to flail desperately with his big long clawed feet. So here I am, brave rescuer, dancing around in the middle of the road, shrieking in surprise, trying to avoid the bloody thing from ripping holes in my skin. I absolutely dont want to drop him as I have visions of the shell shattering and then being stuck with some naked creature that will require a visit to the Emergency Room! The 18 wheeler truck driver is killing himself laughing, as is the pick- up driver, and I make a sort of mad dash for the far verge with this extremely unhappy turtle! I put him on the ground, headed away from the road, and all of a sudden all the flailing parts disappeared into his shell. Stupid beast! The truck driver made a huge honk of horn and waved to me. The pick-up truck driver waved, I waved. We had saved a life! I hurried back to the car. I looked back at Mr Grouch the Turtle, he had all legs and head out and was heading off into the nearby woods as fast as he could!
