I was able to find the Smith Farm Today. I had been talking to my parents and they actually scolded me. How could you not remember? Of course I remember, but to me it was never a farm. it was a place where us children went on a summer afternoon. I remember Lena Mummert, Risa Binder, Niki Sharp, Kathryn J. Davis, Kevin Loughran (my brother), and Laura Couvillion all went there. It was a place where the vegetables were always free. I have one memory when Niki Sharp one evening and seeing Ms. Smith (at least I think it was her). She never went out much and when she did, the town knew her. She told us be careful the wooden home you are running through is full of history and its old. Dont get hurt. funny thing was it was the only place I never did get hurt. I had no idea as a child that the wooden home was where slaves used to reside in, and if I was told I was too young to understand I guess. To young to understand the full history and naive enough to think that the land and this place would always remain. I remember the cows on Soaring Hill Road, and Hound Hill Court. If you think about it the farm was Columbia. It meant different things to all of us. To some the woods were an urban legend of hauntings and witches were children would go into the woods and never to return, like in the story of Hansel and Gretal. To others it was a place of wheat fields, and cows and where a game of hide and seek could go on for hours. It was ours, this group that we belong to. It was our oasis, that no one could ever repeat. It was a time where we could stay out late. I grew up in the 1980s in Columbia. As I took my older daughter to the farm today, it was like time was standing still. Even though I know it cannot be so, it was not time but the memories that came back. The memories of running through the wheat field with Niki Sharp, and Kevin and Corey Kufferman and playing tag. I took pictures not only of the farm, but of the land. The land that meant so much to each and everyone of us for different reasons. As you look through these pictures; I can give you this; it was as if time did stand still for all of us. Just like time, all of us the young and the old we are together again in the memories that we hold. I give you the pictures of the Smith Farm... Enjoy
