I was asked about how one would deal with another dog with a Willow and no treats. Here is my answer..... 1) treats are used at a high rate of treat to correct behavior OR treat to scary stuff in the initial stages of behavior change. This is done to get the behavior moving and to help make bad stuff feel better. 2) you SHOULD not put your dog into the situation that is creating the scary stuff and reactivity while you are in the initial stages. That is too much. You put your dog into the over threshold where no learning occurs -- just reaction. 3) when used correctly treats are slowly faded out until they are a look here is a cookie kind of thing. If you are using a treat EVERY TIME after the initial stage of getting it -- you are actually weakening the behavior and not using them correctly. Gamblers play because of the anticipation of the win -- it is science and proven. 4) if you have a dog with these issues-- you are better off seeking professional help so you dont make the problems worse. 5) behavior change takes time. There is no magic pill (or collar). REAL - ACTUAL behavior change is not about suppressing your dogs behavior with a shock, choke or jolt...it is about taking the time to systematically create change. This means in both the dogs (or any other living creatures) emotional response and the behavior choice made. I get much better results with peoples dogs because I am calm, confident in what I am doing and patient enough to work through the issues with the dog ... If you are having issues and still want to be out with your dog -- you get in the car and drive to where those things that set your dog off do not exist or at least are much less likely to happen to prevent the behaviors...
