I was asked by Shane for a top 15 most influential movies. VERY HARD to do. Influential to me? Society? Movies that made an impression? Movies I loved to watch once? Or over and over? I dunno! I bit of all of it. Here goes: Its not an earth changing list, in fact, its pretty predictable. If you ask me again in 6 months, itll change. Mostly my choices were based on by the end credits I just went YES! THe characters, script, settings, sense of place, direction, themes 1) contact - just wow. lots of people would think its a bit heavy handed, but blows me away every time. 2) fellowship of the ring - the setup and sense of overwhelming doom. 3) Matrix 1. Perfect telling of hero of a thousand faces, best character arc that makes you want to yell HELL YES. 4) Empire strikes back. Took the genre and story and characters into places that nobody had a right to expect, and did it perfectly. 5) ghostbusters - epic comedy that just clicked with me. 6) office space - same as above, and at least I dont have Lumburg as my boss. 7) war of the worlds Steven Spielberg edition. Perfectly captures that sense of helplessness and doom that the original story was all about. 8) Saving private ryan - mostly for the war scenes. the human tradegy of war, there are no victors. 9) raiders of the lost ark. Perfect action movie, great characters! 10) the incredibles - actually I say the same here. Love the mix of themes and issues as well as perfectly scripted action scenes. I LOT of modern action movies could learn a lot from this. 11) the iron giant. The sense of time and place - and a GIANT ROBOT! 12) back to the future. Different take where the main character isnt the main character. Its about his Dad. Love the comedy and script. 13) aliens - say no more. 14) goodfellas. Best mob film ever. You go along with it, and almost think its right. 15) inception. wow. Honorable mentions goto: - memento - great way to mess up the audiences mind. - dawn of the dead (original) wanted to watch it for years as a kid, first REAL horror movie that made me feel dirty not just grossed out. - national lampoons christmas vacation. Never get sick of this, just SO funny - star trek reboot. Epic awesomeness... although Spock has lost a bit of his true self, but the movie and franchise is in good hands. - the castle. Living in the UK, I referred to this a LOT, great lines and sometimes a little close to home!
