I was asked by a Fresman in an email, Why did I take Sociology? I told him, not to get rich. And I sent him an essay where you can find this subversive part: “Sociology….Simply by doing its cognitive job, puts the institutional order and its legitimating thought patterns under critical scrutiny. Sociology has a built-in debunking effect. It shows up the fallaciousness of socially established interpretations of reality by demonstrating that the facts do not gibe with the official view or, even more simply by relativizing the latter, that is, by showing that it is only one of several possible views of society….It unmasks vested interests and makes visible the manner in which the latter are served by social fictions. At least in certain situations, then, sociology can be political dynamite.” Sociologist Peter Berger wrote this in 1971 when he was still humanist. During Vietnam War, fearing the New Left, he sold his soul to Washington and became conservative. That is how sociologists are made! They start as humanists and radicals, and then they become apologists of the status quo.
