I was asked by someone who came to the masjid why do Wahhabies not pray sunnahs / voluntary prayers ? I replied they do. Ibn Qudamah (rahimahullah) Offering voluntary prayers at home is better, because the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said “You should pray in your houses, for the best of a man’s prayer is in his house, apart from the obligatory prayers.” [1]. It was narrated from Zayd ibn Thabit (radiyallahu anhu) that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “A man’s prayer in his house is better than his prayer in this masjid of mine, apart from the obligatory prayers.” [2] . Ibn Qudamah comments And that is because praying at home is closer to sincerity and further removed from showing off. [3] The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said “Perform some of your prayers in your houses and do not make them like graves.” [4] Imam Nawawi (rahimahullah) “Perform some of your prayers in your houses and do not make them graves” mean, pray in them (your houses), and do not make them like graveyards which are devoid of prayer. What is referred to here is naafil (supererogatory) prayers.
