I was asked to list the Top 10 books which I had read & liked by me by Vasumathy Krishnan and after a lot of thought I could come up with the list which is below: The Top 10 books I have read and liked are as follows (in order of priority): 1. Ponniyin Selvan (a Tamil Historical Novel) by Kalki An all-time best historical in any language, according to me. Unputdownable or unswitch-offable (audio book is also available, thanks to Mr. பாம்பே கண்ணன் கண்ணன்) 2. Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahamsa Yogananda Though Thalaivar indirectly referred this book to me and I got it ordered thru an e-retailer in early to mid-2000s, I could never read it beyond a few pages. Ultimately it was another Thalaivar fan Pradeep Kumar who gifted me with the audio book which I heard during my to & fro time to office. This is a path breaking book and changed the perception of God within me and made me to sort of align my thinking about God to that of, of all people, M. Karunanidhi. 3. Yavana Rani (a Tamil Historical Novel) by Chaandilyan Thanks to my mother, I developed the reading habit at a young age & used to read many Tamil & English books. This novel by Chandilyan about the famed Karikaal Cholan was read by me during my school days. I find this the best historical novel of Chandilyan, even better than his much more acclaimed Kadal Pura. If someone is prepared to make an audio book of this novel, I will surely buy & listen to it. 4. The Eye of the Needle by Ken Follet Though this is not the first English novel I read, it was one of the raciest books & never ever left my imagination. It happens during the 2nd World War in Britain. The author will bring together two totally independent events and from then on, you wont put it down without finishing it. If you have not read it, run for a book shop to get it. Now! 5. The Day of The Jackal by Frederick Forsyth The Best Author in English spy/espionage novels who writes with such details and research that you will be intricately immersing yourself with the character and environment of the novel. This particular novel was also read by me in one sitting the first time (read it once more). I watched the movie also in Casino theatre and the climax scene literally made me nervous. Class novel. Not to be missed category. 6. Tiger by the Tail by James Hadley Chase 7. Hit and Run by James Hadley Chase Both the above novels are written by the same author and both are racy masala stories with twists and turns and a good ending. Bharathiraja has already stolen some portions of Tiger by The Tail for his Tik, Tik, Tik movie. Good time pass stories. 8. The Count of Monte Cristo by Sir Alexander Dumas I read the Tamil translation version of this classic novel as per my mothers recommendations. I got the book from the Corporation Library near my house during my school days. A typical revenge story set in a few centuries back happening, you guessed it right, in France. It has come as a movie too and I have seen it but reading the novel is far better than watching a 2 hour movie. Worth spending the time to read a superb classic. 9. The Godfather by Mario Puzho I read this novel when the Godfather mania came to India in late 70s and though a bit slow to start with initially and during the Italian sojourn of Dons last son, I enjoyed the way it picks up speed and how circumstances will impose totally unexpected happenings! Something similar happened in the political horizon in India in the 90s in the way in which a PVN or HDD Gowda became PM from nowhere and I used to wonder how Mario Puzho thought about such an unexpected development in his novel too much earlier. A good read of the novel is required to understand the film better. 10. Any number of Perry Mason mysteries by Earl Stanley Gardener. I became a Perry Mason fan thanks to my school-mate Anantharam K V who used to lend me one book after another. After reading these PM stories, I got enamored of court procedures and in fact started liking cross examinations, though I never wanted to become a lawyer myself! There are many PM mysteries and many of the characters like DA, his secretary Della, his detective (whats his name?) etc are etched in memory. In fact, Tamil writer Sujatas inspiration for creating Ganesh & Vasanth characters must be borne out of reading these novels only, I guess. Anyway, I have bored you people with my list of Top 10 books I liked. Now, as per the convention, I am also supposed to invite a few people to spread this chain. And so I hereby invite the following people to share their Top 10 books which they liked: Viji Arun, Anantharam Murali, Rajagopal Gopi, Dharmarajan Radhakrishnan, Pradeep Kumar, Giriraj Prakasam, Sriram Kamal, Maithri Venkatraman, Kishan Ramesh, Deepak Srikumar
