I was asked to list the duties of the City Marshal: The marshal is the executive arm of the Lafayette City Court. Any orders of Judge Saloom or Bouillion are addressed to the City Marshal. The Marshal has 17 deputies to assist in carrying out these orders. The orders include subpoenas to get witnesses, defendants, victims and attorneys to court. Warrants of arrest for when people fail to appear in court. Orders of evictions (The Marshal is essentially the Constable for the city and Wards 3 and 10). With respect to civil cases in city court the orders of the court could be seizure of property and garnishment of wages. The Marshal has an obligation to carry out those orders as well. The Marshal is a law enforcement officer and the deputies have an obligation to act and train similar to deputy Sheriffs and police officers when they encounter criminal activity. The City Marshal is not primarily responsible for calls for service but deputies are expected to provide basic public safety needs in the community. The Marshal has the same authority and powers of the Sheriff within their jurisdiction. I certainly posses the training, energy, and knowledge to fulfill the basic responsibilities but most importantly I have the tools to do this job while providing additional services and opportunities to our city.
