I was at Mickey’s the last night. For those who don’t know, Mickey’s is an awesome, friendly neighborhood watering hole. I was re-connecting with an advertising colleague I hadn’t seen in some time. A little girl, maybe 9 or 10 was seated at a table in the corner. She’d made a little sign that read, FREE TATTOOS and propped it up on the table. To make these tattoos, she was using an interesting transfer method that relies on scotch tape and blue marker. Fairly painless, very cute. I asked her to do a tattoo on my wrist of either a dinosaur or a heart. She showed much concern about trying to deliver on the dinosaur and she thought the heart idea was a little mundane. “I could do a heart-shaped skull!”, she suggested as a more interesting (and doable) choice. I agreed. When she was done planting an awesome blue heart/skull on my wrist, I gave her a tip. Two dollars, I think. She beemed! Her eyes got huge and she acted like she’d just opened the gift she was hoping for on Christmas morning. I’m pretty sure it was the first time she’d gotten paid for her tattoo service. Remember, her sign said, Free Tattoo; NOT Free Tattoo with purchase of tickets to the school play, or cookies, or anything. And there was no tip jar in sight. Her only motivation was simply to share something she’d recently learned. It was so cute. I went on about my conversation with my colleague and a few minutes later the little girl presented me with a little thank you note. I got my dinosaur!
