I was at the Junction Shopping Mall today and while walking - TopicsExpress

I was at the Junction Shopping Mall today and while walking towards the entrance, I decided to stop by the shoe shiners to wipe my shoes. Well, the guy did a good job, I cant complain. However, I was shocked when I asked how much the service cost only for the guy to tell me its Ksh 300. I was like 300? Since when did they start charging such amounts for wiping shoes? The last time i used the same street shinners in town i was charged ksh 30. Could it be that these guys are this expensive coz of location or just mere exploitation? This incident reminded me of some article that i had read the other day that there is a sudden increase in spending power by the middle class in Kenya, and thats why most international brands are opening shops here. What is this spending power attributed to? As a country have we really grown that much economically to explain this sudden high expenditure by the middle class? Where is this money coming from? Any economist in the house?
