I was at the hospital, waiting for a down elevator after a doctor’s appointment, when a couple who looked to be in their eighties joined me. He seemed fairly robust but she was in rough shape, walking slowly with a cane and wearing a large padded eye patch. More than a minute passed, and he looked at me and sighed. “These elevators are really bad at lunchtime,” he said, and put a hand on her shoulder to steady her. There was a piece of lint or something on her chin, and he reached out with his other hand to brush it off. It was such an intimate, caring gesture that for a moment I had to look away. But still no elevator, and she was starting to get shaky. To distract her and try to lighten the moment I said, “Maybe they forgot about us. I’ll go scare up some rope and we can toss it out the window and rappel down. It’s just three floors.” They both smiled. “Great idea,” he said. “After you.”
