“I was brought up Free Will Baptist … you know, for those times when being Southern Baptist isnt conservative enough! Reverend Sam preached every Sunday about how everyone except Bible-believin, born-agains were going to hell. People spoke in tongues and ran up and down the aisles. The preachers wife Denise actually would kick her shoes off. The music was dreadful and there were a lot of bad hymns. Perhaps the worst is that in small-town Appalachia, almost all of the churches are like that: judgmental, nasty and liturgy-free. To really put the icing on the cake, that church never fed the hungry or gave clothes to the poor. I spent the next 30 years wandering in the spiritual desert until this year when I converted to an Episcopalian. There are lots of gay people at my church and I sing bass with the choir. This Sunday I helped prepare twelve laundry baskets full of food going out to 12 needy families. See, Christ was, by any analysis, a leftie. The right has tried to undermine and pervert his message, but as for me, I will honor Christ by actually listening to what he has to say. It is about honoring creation, not dominionism. Christ said ‘blessed are the poor,’ not ‘he who dies with the most toys wins.’ As this Advent season rolls on, I remain prayerful that more people will hear Christs true message of humility, service and love.” -- Mike Grigsby-Lane, member of The Christian Left
