I was called 2 days ago about a Bobby calf who had been born VERY late ( the main calving season is July-September ) He was born on Boxing Day and . The Bobby calf truck which picks up all of the male calves and takes them to slaughter during calving season does not come up here at this time of year so when male calves are born out of season they are either shot or sold to someone to grow out which means keeping them until they are 18 months-2years old and then sending them to slaughter. I tried to find a safe home for the little calf but had no luck and was out of options. Today I get a message from a lovely woman saying herself and her daughter would like to save 2 Bobby calves and have them as lifelong pets as they had just bought acreage and could I help her with finding some ?? ( just to put things in perspective , finding safe homes for farm animals, especially cows and pigs is like winning the Lotto ! ) So I rang the people who had the calf and secured him and then rang other dairies and found another little guy who was born on Christmas Eve . We picked them both up this afternoon and will have the joy of babysitting until we take them to their forever home on Wednesday. The black and white boy is pure Fresian, he was born on Boxing Day and the brown and white boy is Fresian/Jersey cross born on Christmas Eve. 2015 is suddenly looking a lot safer and brighter for these 2 boys, as are all of the years that follow ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
