I was challenged to name 10 books that have had meaning to me over the years. I feel so pleased that someone actually knows I might have read a book or a thousand. Here goes, somewhat in order of importance: 1) Beautiful Losers, Leonard Cohen 2) Undercurrents, Ridley Pearson 3) The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, Mordecai Richler 4) When My Love Returns From The Ladies Room Will I Be Too Old To Care, Lewis Grizzard 5) Collected Poems, Irving Layton 6) The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald 7) The Grass Is Always Greener Over The Septic Tank, Erma Bombeck 8) Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town, Stephen Leacock 9) Lake Wobegon Days, Garrison Keillor 10) The 39 Steps, John Buchan. It would take far too many keystrokes to explain this eclectic list of books, but the short version is: Two I read in school and thoroughly enjoyed in long ago English classes. Three are by people who had the unfortunate experience to be my university lecturers (one of whom convinced me to be a writer instead of studying other peoples work and remained a mentor until his death). One is by a friend who taught me more about writing than a thousand books could ever tell. Three are by people who inspired me in this crazy business And one I had the honor of teaching with several years ago.
