I was chatting with my friend Tracy Whaley and she said her Blythe dolls reminded her of my dolls. When you start to do interviews about your work, you are always asked where does your influences derive from? so this gets you to thinking. Many years ago I was posed this question and I thought deeply over and over and then I remembered an image that has stuck in my mind forever. I think we remember things that are accompanied with emotion. My childhood playmate had this image hanging is his home. I felt what the kitten was feeling. Therefore it stuck. I believe this may have been an influence in my work. I did not know anything about this image and went searching for answers. turns out it was painted by artist known as LEE. Not too much information to know about LEE. Also very popular and confused with LEES works were paintings by Margaret Keane. I never saw any of her work till a year ago. Big eyed sad kids. Funny thing is the Blythe doll was modeled after her works. So I guess this answers the question....ALSO people often tell me oh you dolls remind me of Tim Burton? Why? I do not know, but now of all people he is doing a movie called BIG EYES....es out this fall. You may of seen BIG EYES toys selling in stores already. About the struggle of Margaret Keane and her X husband who claimed ownership of her art. Tim has a few years on me but I bet as children we may of been influenced by similar things. him making this movie makes the story come like full circle. I always say the 1970s were the best time to be kid!
