I was cleaning out some drawers the other day and came across these pics. How ironic since it was just about 9 years ago when this happened! THIS was what our lovely honeymoon looked like! After spending two luxurious days on our resort at the Grand Xcaret in Riviera Maya, we were placed in a hurricane shelter for 72 hours while category 5 Hurricane Wilma passed through! The winds reached to about 205 mph and once released from the shelter we were stuck on the resort for an additional 7 days with limited times of electricity and water use and no contact to the outside world (except for Matt climbing on a roof with a random stranger from MTV (yes, an American) paying him $50 to use his satellite phone for about 2 minutes so that our families new we were alive. Since the airport was destroyed planes were not allowed to and from for several days. Once they were, it was a first come first serve basis so, Matt and I decided to take a huge risk by leaving our resort 7 days later around 1am to be taken to a random field in Cancun where we stood in lines miles long. At 5am the airlines set up folding tables and took the first 500. Thankfully, we were within the first 500 and were taken by bus to the steps of a huge plane, which then flew us to Atlanta. I was finally able to call my family to tell them we were back in the U.S.! Whew!! It that isnt a way to spend your first 10 days as a married couple I dont know what is!
