The problem with the term African-American is that practically nobody knows that the strict definition specifies ancestry from slaves. Have you ever seen a form with an ethnicity section that has an entry for black with no family history of enslavement? President Obama is identified as African-American, despite his father leaving Kenya around 1960. According to the strict definition, Michelle Obama is African-American, but Barack is not. According to the popular definition, both are. The fact that the term uses the same form as Italian-American or Irish-American doesnt help. • And thats why its stupid. • Why is that stupid? • African American refers to Americans originally from Africa (or with African ancestry). That is how such descriptors work. Despite what you may feel, South Africans that are white and come to America can be called African Americans.
