I was completely unaware until now that John Ross, a Scottish missionary, first introduced Christianity to the people of Kores. My discovery came about as an unintended consequence of browsing the Internet, and looking up how Rev Albert Bogle , one time school chaplain at Boness Academy-where I worked 1983-1992, got on as Moderator of the Church of Scotland. Thanks for your reflection, Albert, I learned a lot from this, about what a moderator does and what the Church of Scotland does in Scotland and beyond. Most people have heard of David Livingstone but fewer people know the story of John Ross. Ross is accredited today by many Korean Christians as being among the first who influenced the spread of the Gospel in Korea. Certainly he is known as the Father of Presbyterianism. As part of our visit to Korea, it was a delight to be able to go to the church which he founded. John Ross was born in Balintore, north of Inverness, in 1842. Although Gaelic was his first language, he understood 11 languages, including English, German, French, Latin, Greek, Hebrew, written Chinese, spoken Mandarin, Manchu and Korean. He worked in Manchuria from 1872 until 1910.
