I was contacted to do a radio talk interview I almost didnt call the producer back since I havent been confident with my speech lately. When I saw that the topic was about the importance of the holiday sales for an independent toy shop, I really had to get over my self esteem issue. I told him that no matter how well Im doing in a given year from the 1st qtr to the 3rd qtr, I have never kept up the same level of success in the 4th qtr. Big toy manufactures, the ones that produce a lot of crappy toys that have very little play value, pump so much money into TV and marketing to kids in the 4th qtr. Big box retailers select those mindless toys for their shelves based strictly on margin and turnover, can afford the crazy Black Friday loss-leader toy sales to drive traffic into their stores. Independent toy stores are mindful that they have to be profitable, but never at the expense of the child. We constantly question the value of the toys & products. Play-rich toys are what children need, not things that big toy companies want to sell to them. Keep this in mind when you shop for toys this holiday season. Btw, the producer would like to have me talk live on the show next week.Uh oh.
