I was curious as to how difficult it is for someone in another country to become a United States citizen. I was appalled with what I found on the United States immigration Web site for those considering immigration: a confusing myriad of forms and discouragement to stay away.. It is complicated. Get someone to help you..... But who? I found on that site a simple 3-question test of eligibility for citizenship. I have filled in my answers. Considering the results, I am now absolutely clear on why there are so many illegal immigrants in our country. We have made it damn near impossible and extremely discouraging for anyone to even be eligible! Even if they are, the requirements to become a citizen are a ridiculous obstacle course of bureaucratic hoops and hurdles that would disqualify 90% of existing citizens by birth. 1) Are you 18?: Yes 2) Do you currently live outside the United States?: Yes 3) Select the one that best applies to you I am currently serving in the U.S. military(no) I was honorably discharged from the U.S. military in the last 6 months(no) I have served in past U.S. military conflict(no) I am an employee or an individual under contract to the U.S.(no) Government I work outside the U.S. for a nonprofit media organization that promotes U.S. interests(no) I am serving on a vessel that the U.S. operates(no) None of the above(yes) You are NOT eligible to apply to become a citizen of the United States. You may try to obtain a permanent resident status card (green card) by marrying a citizen or you may become eligible to enter the United States through employment, investment, family, or refugee status. ~ John Donaldson, July 5, 2014 us-immigration/
