I was curious if you all ( Jeff Buckler, Troy Thompson, Rodger Mader, and Keith Childers) seen this comment by Cris Carter, stating Detroit doesnt need to get a no. 2 WR, because Stafford is three years removed from 5000 yards, Burleson wouldve filled that role had he not gotten hurt, and Ryan Broyles will breakout next year. And he stated they have bigger needs. With all due respect Cris, your points have a few important flaws. 1. When Stafford threw for all those yards, Burleson was the No. 3 receiver. The No. 2 was Titus Young, a rookie who had a solid first campaign making teams pay for all the attention they paid Calvin.. Too bad he became a headcase a year later. Had he not done this, your point wouldve been more valid. That team also had a fairly healthy Best. While Bush is an upgrade in a lot of ways, Best was younger, faster, and more dangerous. He was like a young Bush in all the ways he could be used. That team also had a healthy Tony Scheffler, who made plays. I do believe Fauria will fill Tonys role with added experience. 2. Burleson is getting up in years and has missed significant time with injuries. He also has disappeared at times despite all the attention Calvin draws. He cant make teams pay for that attention. And hes better suited for the slot anyways. As is.... 3. Ryan Broyles has shown he can be a playmaker when hes on the field. But hes coming off his third consecutive serious knee injury. We cant exactly count on him. 4. Ill give you the needs argument. We could use a safety who can stay on the field who makes plays. Delmas clearly cant be counted on anymore. Our corners are also young and only Bentley has made it through a full season. But all four young corners drafted in the past two years are talented. they really just need work on technique. My bigger concern is Houston, but considering his contract, and the cap hit if hes cut, hes not going anywhere. The reason for taking a young WR is that this offense needs someone who can make teams pay for double and tripling Calvin. This someone needs to be a vertical threat, and there isnt one on the roster. Not an aging slot receiver who has lost deep speed (Burleson). Not another slot receiver who cant stay on the field. Not a young, tall, fast receiver who runs inconsistent routes and struggles catching at times. (Corey Fuller) And not a tall receiver who struggles to get separation (Durham) And one final note. If Calvin doesnt need a no. 2, you didnt need Anthony Carter and Jake Reed. Your numbers in Philly and Miami state otherwise At any rate, how I view our team needs: 1. Wide receiver. Possession guys need not apply. This guy must be tall and fast, willing to go up and get high passes. He will face a lot of single coverage and needs to hurt defenses for doing this. 2. Safety. Delmas cant be counted on. If Louis returns, this guy must be ready to step in. Now 3. Strongside LB: A solid front seven needs a guy who can cover TEs. That guy isnt Ashlee Palmer. Should be fast too as the Wide 9 does get burned sometimes. Tough would help as he will have to take on linemen 4. Center: If Dom returns, he wont last forever. Need to look into drafting a replacement for either this year or next. 5. Kicker. The injury excuse for Akers is gone 6. Cornerback: Hedging bets by finding a late developmental gem. Wont need to play right away hopefully 7. Defensive Tackle: There is no depth behind Fairley and Suh 8. Quarterback: Need to replace Hill eventually. Kellen Moore isnt an answer
