I was deeply impressed to see how my son Jason instinctively put both hands in nearly perfect position plucking the strings and fingering the notes. Carpal tunnel syndrome and tendonitus are directly associated with several very bad habits that bass players have such as playing entirely too hard, not adjusting their truss rods correctly, and playing strings that often are too heavy to play comfortably. The result is a time in bass history where more bassists are injuring themselves as both carpel tunnel and tendonitus are self induced injuries. Here are a couple of things to know about hand pain. 1. You wont fix it by stretching. Nor will you prevent it by stretching either. 2. Yoga for hands wont prevent hand injuries. Look at the musical history of nearly every player on nearly every instrument. None used Yoga or hand strengthening exercises or stretching to avoid injury. Learn from the past because everyone who could play did this by only practicing music and playing. You will not be happy in the long run with your musical results by learning in any other way other than via musical content and a regular playing schedule. Relax your hands (as shown in this photo below), turn up your volume, get lighter strings then turn up the bass on your amp. straighten your bass neck and pluck a little lighter. And never attend to your hands via exercises stating that they will help you to prevent hand injuries. They wont! Playing efficiently will!
