I was discussing the carrier bag issue with a lady yesterday. Like many other merchants Im finding that uncomfortable question Would you like a bag? a difficult one to ask. She wondered why retailers werent just absorbing the costs, especially larger companies. I explained that we werent allowed to, that if we did that the whole point of paying for a bag became meaningless. The point is to make people more aware of recycling and the effect that distributing thousands and thousands of carrier bags means to the environment. Large companies are finding that a huge chunk of advertising, their name on a bag, has suddenly gone, so if they could absorb the cost Im sure they would! Truth is, were obliged by Scottish law to either charge (and limited companies have to show the charge on receipts as proof) or ask for a direct donation to charity. Every company Ive spoken to are donating the bag charge to a charity, so the money doesnt go to them. They arent lining their pockets. If you dont want to carry a pocket full of bags then buy a bag. Donate that 5p to charity :)
